About the event

Smartphones are one of the biggest parenting decisions of the moment — and one of the hardest to get guidance on. This workshop gives you clear, practical, psychologically-informed direction so you can make the right call for your family and manage it with confidence once the phone is in your child's hands.

Led by Dr Patricia Barber, Chartered Counselling Psychologist, this session cuts through the noise and gives you what you actually need: what to decide, how to introduce it, how to manage it, and how to talk about it — without fear-mongering and without a one-size-fits-all rule.

What we'll cover

  • What age is appropriate — how to judge readiness rather than relying on a magic number

  • How to introduce it — setting your child up well from day one

  • Safe mobile use — understanding parental controls, and the workarounds children commonly use to get around them

  • Managing conversations about phone use — how to talk to your child without shutting down honesty

  • What parents need to be aware of — the risks worth knowing, explained calmly and clearly

  • How you use it yourself — because managing phone use in the house starts with the adults too

What's included

  • A live 90-minute online workshop

  • A recording sent to everyone who books — can't make it live? No problem

  • A take-home PDF guide covering parental controls and the common workarounds children use

  • The chance to ask your own questions live
